Built in 1908, Lee County’s historic Courthouse is located in the city of Bishopville in Lee County, South Carolina. In need of major repair and replacement roof work for the building, Lee County tapped Stewart-Cooper-Newell Architects to assist them in this process and ensure a quality end result.
SCN Architects proposed the demolition, repair and replacement of the existing roof system. To ensure proper drainage, the roof’s drain system was cleaned. Terra cotta repair of the ornamentation balustrade was achieved by filling the cracked portions of terra cotta with non-shrink, epoxy grout, which stabilized them and prevents further degradation. The portions of terra cotta that have broken loose were repaired to a smooth finish with the same epoxy grout, colored to match the existing terra cotta. A new 8’0 mil fiberglass reinforced PVC Roofing Membrane was also installed.
