21,000 SF Addition 10,000 SF Renovation

Project Description

For this complex renovation and expansion project Stewart-Cooper-Newell Architects was up to the challenge. The renovation portion involved gutting and redesigning an existing two-story building, including a basement that was redesigned into a children’s dental clinic and a large addition to the medical clinic. The staging of the design and construction was critical in order to keep the facility open-and-operating under the State of North Carolina standards.

Once completed the facility included an expanded Family Health Services Division, a new Women’s Health Department, Home Care, an Environmental Health office, and a new dedicated Children’s Health Services. Each department has its own examination rooms, offices, records storage, and waiting areas. To prevent the spread of airborne infectious diseases (such as COVID-19), the Adult Health section was isolated from the rest of the building with its own HVAC system, entrance, and ultraviolet antibacterial lights in the halls and exam rooms. The lab area for the facility is centrally located for easy access from each department. To improve the flow of visitors to the facility, several departments have entrances that are accessible only to their staff and visitors. The facility also includes a break area for staff members, with separate restroom facilities.
